Rach's story

When my relationship with my children’s father ended, things had to change, and fast. Suddenly, I had to step back from my career, reduce my hours, and rearrange my life to prioritize school drop-offs, pick-ups, and simply being there for my kids.

Spots was born out of my own frustration as a former single parent, navigating the complexities of raising my children while balancing work and personal life. For years, I worked as a bank manager, pouring energy into my career, but as soon as I found myself in the position of single parent, my priorities had to change, quite often leaving me worse-off finacially.

No relief for single parents
Around a similar time, I noticed that there were other groups such as NHS workers and veterans recieving discounts but single parents had no equivalent. This means that a full-time single parent could end up paying 20% more than a married doctor, this just didn't seem fair to me.

The scale of the problem
Later, working for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), I saw first hand the daily challenges single parents face—juggling responsibilities, mounting bills and inflation, and managing an endless list of to-dos with little support. It became clear to me that single parents often carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, yet their strength and resilience often go unrecognized.
